Purpose of the flight and payload description

The objective of the flight was to obtain the vertical distribution of atmospheric ozone using an Electro-Chemical Cell (ECC) ozonesonde transported by a rubber meteorological balloon of 7 meters of diameter (expanded volume of 200 m3).

The balloon was launched at 4:50 Japan Standard Time on May 15, 2013 from the Taiki Aerospace Research Field in the island of Hokkaido, northern Japan. The winds transported the balloon to the east over the Pacific Ocean to a point located 65 km east of the launch base where after reaching the maximum expansion at 32 km of altitude, the balloon exploded.

The payload fell to the ocean and was not recovered.
