Purpose of the flight and payload description

The goal of the flight was to observe the vertical ozone distribution in the stratosphere. The optical ozone sonde used was of new design, equipped with much higher resolution than previous flights that was realized by enhancing the data transfer rate and empowered with high-precision measuring of GPS-borne data such as location, altitude and wind velocity.

Details of the balloon flight

Balloon launched on: 9/5/2002
Launch site: Sanriku Balloon Center, Iwate, Japan
Balloon launched by: Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS)
Balloon manufacturer/size/composition: Zero Pressure Balloon model BT5 5.000 m3
Flight identification number: BT5-23
End of flight (L for landing time, W for last contact, otherwise termination time): 9/5/2002
Balloon flight duration (F: time at float only, otherwise total flight time in d:days / h:hours or m:minutes - ): 2 h 50 m

The performance of this new instrument was verified, and data on the vertical distribution of ozone density up to the altitude of 39km was successfully obtained through concurrent observations via both conventional and new instruments.
