Purpose of the flight and payload description

The instrument consisted of two identical plastic scintillators, for measuring the charge of each particle and a liquid Cerenkov counter with an effective index of refraction of 1.27. This index of refraction that allows precise velocity measurements for particles with energies around 1 GeV per amu. Each detector is enclosed in a white, high-reflectance light integration box for a maximum uniformity of response and is viewed by twelve photomultiplier tubes. A multiwire proportional chamber hodoscope is included to define the trajectory of the particle through the instrument to correct for path length and non uniformity variations and to help select nuclear events from background.
